Find a large pot or container at least 12 inches across or purchase a specific potato planter
Put a layer of compost in the bottom of the pot - multi-purpose compost is fine for potatoes. Then place your potatoes on top of this. Then cover the potatoes with a couple of inches of compost
Only one potato would be needed for a 12 inch pot. A 24 inch pot can hold up to 3 seed potatoes
Step 5
As the potato plants grow, earth them up. This involves adding additional compost so about 2 inches of foliage is left showing
Continue earthing up with compost until the compost is nearly at the top of your container, then you can stop adding compost. Then just let the leaves grow
Keep well watered and feed with a potato fertiliser whilst the potato plants are in growth
Step 5
Your potatoes are ready to harvest when the plants have flowered and the foliage starts to turn yellow and die down. The foliage can be removed and watering should be stopped
You can either empty out all the compost and harvest all your potatoes at once or you can leave the potatoes in the compost in the container and just reach into the compost and pull out the potatoes you require
