Gardening Jobs for the Month

With a chill in the air January is a time to sit back, relax and plan your garden for the year. So read a good gardening book and start ordering your seeds. There are a few gardening jobs you can be getting on with now though if you are brave enough to venture out in the cold.

Usually the coldest month of the year with hard frosts still common. Make the most of any milder days and get into the garden when you can. Snowdrops will be in bloom so spring isn't far away.

Everything is growing at full speed and gardening jobs are mounting thick and fast. You can start planting now but don't let sunny days lull you into a false sense of security. Sharp frosts are still common and will wipe out any tender plants if you haven't protected them.

The garden will be looking beautiful and with two bank holidays to look forward to you will have extra time to spend outside relaxing or undertaking those essential gardening tasks.

Strawberries and cream, the real taste of a summer's day, which is even better if you have grown your own. With the warm summer sun beating down it's time to invite friends round and enjoy your garden. However there are still jobs to do.

Now at the height of summer and one of the hottest months of the year watering will be taking up a lot of your time. Holiday season is upon us and you may be going away, so make plans to look after your plants when you are not there. 

Warm days continue and the garden will be slowly transitioning into autumn as the month goes by. There will still be plenty of watering to do but also those routine jobs such as weeding and deadheading to prolong flowering. 

Bulb season is upon us. You can buy and plant bulbs now to give you a glorious splash of colour in the spring. Bulbs are one of the easiest plants to grow so great for novice and experienced gardeners alike. In the garden colours are changing to more autumnal hues.

A great time to plant trees and shrubs whilst the soil is still warm. You can still plant bulbs now too. Attractive yellows, oranges and red colours grace the garden. 

Winter is fast approaching but there may still be some warm days. Just because it is near the end of the year it doesn't mean that there aren't jobs you can do in the garden.

The weather outside is frightful..... but that doesn't mean that you can't plan ahead for the new year. Catch up on your reading with the latest gardening books, circle those seeds you want to buy in the seed catalogues and adorn your home with cheerful Christmas houseplants.
