Watering your plants in one of those underrated skills and there's a lot more to it than you think. So if you want to water like a Pro read our article for great advice and top tips.
- Check out your favourite weather app to see what the temperature is going to be and whether substantial rain is forecast
- Just because there has been some rain it doesn’t necessarily mean the plants have had enough water you still need to check
- Aim the water at the soil or compost and not at the leaves or flowers
- Wetting the foliage may do more harm than good and can result in leaf scorch in hot weather
- Avoid getting the water on the flowers as this can discolour them
- It may be necessary to go over the plants more than once as water can take a while to soak in, especially if the compost or soil is very dry
- You may need to water more than once in very hot weather, especially vegetable plants
- Avoid watering in the hottest part of the day, early morning is best
- Water methodically so that no plants are missed
- Windy conditions dry out plants just as much as hot weather so you might need to water if it has been windy
- If your plants are in small plastic pot, lift the pot to feel the weight of the plant to see if it requires watering
- Do not wait for a plant to wilt before you water, damage will have already been done. The plant may or may not recover once watered
- Giving a non aquatic plant too much water will mean that the roots can't breathe and the roots rot
- In the winter if the soil or compost in the pots is frozen do not water as the plant won't be able to absorb water from the soil
